Cris_Citrus (he/him <3)

I like art and being nice to people on the internet. At least most of the time. My previous account was Cris_Color before changing instances

Queer, gender-messy twink. Into crafts. Learning how to care for plants. Nerdy about fish and aquariums.

  • There are fair critisisms to make of OP’s post, this is frankly not a good one. The difference is that op is in community (here, on lemmy) with the person who posted the meme, and op is entirely justified in telling people they’re in community with that their behavior is harmful

We’re not taking about canceling someone or taking things off netflix, we’re talking about whether this platform with many trans people on it, treats trans people who are currently experiencing lots of vulnerability, with respect and care, or denigrates that already vulnerable group.

The argument that vulnerable people can’t critisize people they’re in community with for not treating them with care when they’re actively threatened, just because it happens in the form of a post of a comedian’s joke, sucks.

Personally, I pointed out this is a shitpost comm and the wrong place to vent, and that the images they’re comparing the referenced one to aren’t really the same thing. But please don’t tell vulnerable people they’re wrong to take issue with people posting hurtful things just because its a joke.

Jokes can still denigrate and disrespect people. People are valid to want to be respected as human beings while online, and are entitled to saying they as a vulnerable person feel the people they’re in community with are failing to treat them with respect.

Theyre also entitled to saying a joke from a comedians set sucks and treats them as a vulnerable group poorly too if they wanna. They have that right too.

  • Couple of thoughts-

This is a shitpost community so serious posting about complaints with lemmy is likely to be poorly received regardless of how valid the hurt is. I’m not really a shitpost kinda person for the most part, but I’m REALLY not surprised venting hasnt garnered much positive reception (honestly I’m a little surprised the votes are almost even)

And second, the posts you embedded are worse and kind-of a different things from the one being referenced. The people in the post being referenced isnt being compared to trans people on the basis that hes ugly or for any of the reasons that make him a gross person. Hes being compared to trans people in large part on aesthetic grounds and because he has though his own action created the way he looks.

I agree in several respects with your sentiment- theres a subtext to that that trans people’s appearances are manufactured and fake, and it drags trans people unrelatedly into commentary about someone people love to clown on, which feels shitty in the current political moment where trans people are being targeted. The post kinda gives me the ick, but its fundamentally not the same thing as the images you’re comparing it to where the basis of the comparison is that theyre ugly or look weird.

But no matter the point, venting on the shitpost comm was never gonna get positive reception. I was confused with how many downvotes you were getting until I saw this was the shitpost comm of all places. I’m frankly surprised you’re getting any upvotes at all, on comments or the post itself, but I’m guessing all of that is from c/all or who didn’t read the comm.

  • That is not a particularly helpful way to engage with someone explaining what someone put them through.

If she did it doesnt seem like it would have done much to someone in his position, and may have carried risk for her. She doesnt owe us an explanation of how she handled things, regardless of how she navigated it or how it went.

In general when someone is explaining how they were harmed its generally not helpful to intergogate whether they handled it “correctly”. Being a victim or being in a position in life where it is easier for you to be a victim rarely leaves you with many good options, or makes it easy to do things the “right” way

  • People who are being exploited are always highly targeted for propaganda and manipulation, explicitly because they have the most revolutionary potential and their position in society makes them more vulnerable to the sales pitch that maybe they can be allowed a seat at the table, even if its a second class one. Uncle tom is a term that’s been around for ages for a reason

Its good to remember our compassion for folks who are being exploited. No one is immune to propaganda, ESPECIALLY those who come from classes where access to higher education is less common
