Yes but that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. They are two different words used to explain two different concepts. Just spell them and articulate yourself correctly. New generations may create modern words to represent modern concepts, but even those need to be spelled correctly to be correctly understood. If teachers adopted your opinion, none of us would have generalised communication (language), and therefore none of us would be able to understand eachother. Misspelling words misrepresents ideas. Nobody spells fart instead of cart and expects you to understand. I agree with the statement but your understanding needs more nuance.
words merging is a thing that happened countless times in English’s history. why make a fuss about this one?
