It’s in the beginning of Dante’s Inferno, not sure where he got the idea from.
Same place all the preachers had to go to answer all the people who kept asking this exact question. They made it up with the only excuse that would get everyone to shut up. It’s not from anywhere.
Well of course none of it is real, but you can still track the origins of specific theological ideas/beliefs from the various individual authors, councils, etc.
