Photo: The most popular post on Mastodon, as of now.
Mastodon started good and scientists were always in the “hot posts” page. Then whatever the fuck happened and we arrived here.
Sigh, I guess every place including the Fediverse will get ruined at one time.
I hope her nice nerdy husband is okay with her going on dates.
Validation slop comes for everything
And then people repost it to get their opinion that it’s bad validated
The goal of the Fediverse is to provide access to everyone equally.
That includes the normies. The average people who don’t necessarily want big brain discussions on social media but to scroll a bit, kill ten minutes on the shitter while reading feelgood stories, and like a few mainstream memes.
That’s not killing the Fediverse. In fact if you want to avoid it… you can filter out these accounts. That’s the beauty of it. There’s no algorithm to force feed you political opinion, propaganda, agenda, one-sided news, etc. - it’s all up to you.
Seeing “normies” is actually kinda the end goal. Make this main stream.
Plot twist:
A scientist posted this.
Everyone clapped?
I’ve noticed a sharp increase in just GARBAGE re-toots (which wind up on the trending page) in the past year or so as more people migrate to Mastodon. Just the worst of Twitter offal finding new life. The trending page is where I get a bit disheartened. When I want to be reminded of what Mastodon is really like, I just click on the Federated tab and see all the random posts from normal people (and bots, so many bots) around the world. Way less snark and self-importance there.
It’s also one of the reasons I was disheartened that .social removed access to the Federated and Local tabs (I got them back by making a complaint–I’ll eventually migrate to a smaller instance). I get that it’s crazy hard to moderate those. But taking that away made Mastodon feel smaller and more like “every other social media.” I don’t want that. I came to Mastodon because it’s different.
In short: Nerds got out-populated lol.
Everyone has a learning treshold. Nerds have it higher, normies lower. So the ratio of what’s popular shifts with the ratio of nerds. xD
Plot twist: the special was pocket spaghetti
