Inspired by a comment where one said he wouldn’t even visit the US and he already lived there, i got curious about whether people dream of living in any other specific country.
What would be your reasons to live in this other country?
I live in Denmark and I am quite satisfied with my life here. I’ve been to many European countries, some Asian countries and Australia.
The only other country I would consider moving to was Australia. I absolutely loved the nature, I liked that it seemed like you could pretty much mind your own business, if you lived in the rural parts, while still not being too far away from “civilization”.
I’ve only been in Australia as a tourist, so it is of course limited how much of the daily life of an Aussie i was exposed to, but those locals I talked to seemed happy, despite hating on the politicians (but that is a global issue, for every country, I guess.), and then there was of course quite a lot of racism, but again, you see that in many countries.
Australia also seem to be spared from a lot of the global political issues we currently see, but I am not sure that is correct.
As a Michigander, I could see myself ending up in Canada. In theory, I already have Canadian citizenship waiting for me (since my grandfather was born there), and if I were to pursue getting that certified, it would definitely make immigrating easier. I think if the elections in the US seem to be compromised this year, I’ll file that paperwork right away, just in case I need to move quickly later.
I’d start now. Immigration has grown quickly a lot less popular in Canada and the government dials it back when people get angry about their own quality of life here.
FYI, the wait for processing is now years-long, due to the large influx of applications and the lack of foresight to increase staffing to manage that. Also, if you don’t already have the documentation to prove who your grandfather is, his citizenship, and who you are in relation to him, archives across the country have been inundated with requests for this kind of genealogical information, and they, too, are under-resource to handle it. (And not only so, but arts, culture, and heritage institutions have had budget slashed all across the country, so there are actually fewer people now to handle these requests.)
Fortunately my mom is a hobby geneaologist, which helps a lot.
The midterms is my bellwether too. I am haunted by images of elderly people in Europe fleeing their homes with what they can carry. I’d rather not end up like that.
