I completely agree with you on the open endedness here. On the one hand, it’s a nice throwback to a time when you didn’t need to explain every joke. On the other hand, maybe this one was a little too vague

I would like to guess that it’s more specific than that, possibly a poorly worded request for an “elephant (sized) cock” or something like that. So he ended up with elephant and rooster features.

I think you’re asking about what is literally ironic in the comic. I think people confuse irony and coincidence very often (as is probably the case in the wording of the character in this comic), and the humor here is that they’re laughing about the silly coincidence of losing their lenses at the same time, but while nobody is left to safely operate the plane.
