  • It’s not the IS that makes them expensive, it’s the locked out ecosystem and the monopoly they have. I’m not saying they’re not good - they are (from what I’ve seen), but healthy competition, if it existed, would’ve driven the prices down a bit.

As for IS itself, since the move to IBIS, it makes sense that some lenses drop the IS and only rely on the body’s. IMO it used to matter in the DSLR days when IBIS was not really a thing. Nowadays it’s sensible to only put it into the longer lenses that physically need it (the longer the lens, the more physical movement required to compensate and so on).

  • There’s a joke in Bulgarian somewhat related to that. What’s commonly referred to as a prune plum we call something that roughly translates to “blue plum”. The joke goes something like this:

    – Dad, what’s this?

    – It’s a blue plum.

    – Why is it red?

    – Because it’s green.

Language is weird, but it’s ironic that our use of it makes it so.

  • I’m not anti-AI, but I’m most definitely anti-corporate greed. I wish there was moderation in all of this. I wish there were regulations instead of letting companies blindly buy hardware before it’s even made based on what they or their competitors might be doing 2 years from now. Fuck that.

With that said, yes, AI is a helpful tool, yes, I’m using it every day at work, and yes, I can do without it no problem - just like I have for many many years.
