I got an email from a client last week asking me to install an AI-generated list of containers onto a server. The key container, the database at the center of the whole system, has commits from Claude in it’s git repository. Great start guys.
They outsouced the software architect job to a chatbot and then had a veteran of the industry who has been around since the internet equivalent of the big bang install a handful of docker containers. Reverse centaur to the max.
It’s going to hurt in 12 months time if they realise the reason why everything sucks is because they built on sand. But they probably won’t even realise why the project failed because their chatbot won’t be able to tell them why.
I did not, it seemed complicated and rabbit-hole-y.
In the end I just added an Anubis-like feature into PieFed. It works great.
It really makes a big difference.
I’ve greatly reduced my Mastodon usage because of the daily “oh shit this link goes to AI slop again, sigh, close tab” experience. It’s such a drag.
I used fail2ban as an anti-scraper strategy for a few months. It helped with the really basic scrapers that only use one or a few IP addresses.
But then they adapted and started using hundreds or thousands of different IP addresses, each one only making a couple of requests. fail2ban became counter-productive as it slowed my server down - the log files it was monitoring became massive under high load and it needs to scan the log files often to check if an IP has been seen before.
I’m not saying don’t try it, I’m saying it’s only effective in some situations.
Also you are using piefed.social which aggressively filters out AI content, the topic of the article.

haha looks like you’re aaalmost at the point where water cooling is compulsory.
Is it a Threadripper? I built a couple of those for architectural rendering, such absolute beasts.

I like the unique double-layer bridge in the picture.

Milk, cheese and butter.
My country produces 10x more dairy products than we need. But they’re sold to the highest bidder globally and that ain’t me.
There’s just you and me here, 1 person isn’t a pile on.
Sorry you’re having a bad time, I hope you feel better soon.
Fair enough.
How websites are labelled is up to the instance admin. It used to be that all labels were warnings but in the latest version of PieFed it became possible to use neutral or positive icons as well:

It still says ‘warning type’ and ‘warning on posts’ in the UI which is an oversight I’ve just noticed!
This change was a result of criticism I read. Often when people write that stuff they think they have discovered some nefarious thing that exists that way because I want it to. The fact is it was all thrown together very quickly so it’s not always well thought-out but when people don’t like things I listen and make changes. Nothing is set in stone.
PieFed has no hardcoded instance or user blocks. You were lied to by bad people.
Of the 12,730 accounts that were active in the last week, there are 60 with the so-called “low quality” indicator, or 0.4%.
And this is in an environment where people cast 32 times more upvotes than downvotes so to earn that badge you need to be super super completely absolutely unpopular. Consistently.
You’re part of a pretty special group.
Maybe try being less of an asshole? See how that goes for you.
ideologically posed to keep the thing open, for the people, by the people
What. Check out the modlog, they ban more people than anyone.
It’s up to the mods and admins what they do with PieFed’s functions. Anything can be misused, even simple stuff. Like for example lemmy.ml has a description “a community for Foss and privacy enthusiasts” set by the admins and then ridicules and bans anyone who pushes back against the .ml political line on China. Lemmy.ml is not about foss and privacy.
The software feature of having a instance description is innocuous but it’s being used for deception.
I removed the word ‘stupid’ from the code 3 months ago, the function is now called ‘reply_is_low_effort’.
The haters don’t bother keeping their propaganda up to date.
Take it easy. artyom might just be mistaken you don’t need to turn it into a class war.
