A recap is for people who have already watched the show and want a reminder or for people who are familiar with the show but want to skip some episodes. A lot of people watch movie trailers and then jokingly say they don’t need to watch the movie because it was all in the trailer. A recap is not a substitute for people who want to watch the show. That’s my opinion.
People aren’t joking when they say that. If you’re watching a movie to be surprised at what happens, some trailers go way too damn far.
Yes that is poor editorial decision making by the studio to spoil the content. Do you really think about watching a movie and then decide to just watch the trailer instead? I think that the discussion is related to damages resulting from people who will watch a recap instead of watching a show.
I avoided watched a few movies for several years because the trailer ruined something important. Completely killed all desire to watch it for me.
The situation is: I might be tempted to watch a movie to find out what happens, but if I know what happens, that particular appeal is not there. I still might go see the movie, but I have one fewer reason to do so.
And I’m kind of in the middle on this. There are spoiler-paranoiacs that seemingly ONLY watch things to see what happens, and, frankly, I wish they’d limit themselves to watching sports because writers and producers twist their stories into incomprehensible knots trying to keep these people guessing (looking at you, Westworld Season 2+).
