Isn’t the stereotype more about selling intentionally inferior products, not that it’s low tech?
Like using cheaper materials and then adding a weight to make it seem less cheap
The stereotype used to be that Chinese products were of lower quality than Korean / Japanese / German equivalents. I don’t think most people cared why, although one explanation I’ve heard is that China enforced a stricter QC than my country, so ones that fail inspection would be sent here. (Also many Chinese products were brought here through legally grey means, so there might simply have been no QC from our side.)
