But, DM clearly set a timer on when apocalypse would happen if certain goals weren’t met. Players sought other goals and thus, lost the campaign.

If the party was smart, they’d have canvassed the crypts and graveyards so the undead army was on their side when it came time to vote.
If they were giving in-universe reminders about the growing undead threat and the arrival of said threat isn’t an immediate campaign ender, then yeah. Gotta roll with what the players do without making their efforts pointless.
