I feel this. I want to support PeerTube/similar — can you recommend one where I can re-upload the YouTube videos I want to preserve? Is that okay to do? Or are those tube sites more for original content?

Again (echoing my top-level comment), I run a music comm on my instance. Not linking because I don’t want to shill for it, but it can’t be too hard to find. I’m wondering if I could (or should‽) use PeerTube/similar to copy/reupload the YouTube videos (because we’re on Lemmy and we’re not supposed to like YouTube, and I really don’t) and then update the links. I actually have a handful of videos YouTube has taken down and I would love to be able to link them. Is that appropriate to ask?

Text. A video link is fine, just sum it up. If I see someone post a video and nothing behind it, I assume they’re just looking to drive engagement to their channel and won’t engage here on Lemmy. I assume they want to engage on the platform they’re posting on.

Disclaimer of bias: I run a comm on Lemmy where I’ve posted over 100 video links with one or more (often a lot more) paragraphs of text behind them. It’s the music comm on the instance I reside on.

Does Ars Technica count? I’m not a member. It’s intimidating because the site caters to science nerds. I’m smart among my people, but I feel like (intelligence wise) I’m just a big fish in a small pond, and that forum is like the ocean — same reason I stay off of “Ask Science” type comms on Lemmy. Some of those places (thinking specifically of their counterparts on Reddit) are pretty brutal if you don’t have a Ph.D.

Anyway, I’d like to know. I kinda miss forums.

I think the ideal would be if we could italicise titles, but we can’t.

Articles and game titles both use title casing though, so it’s grammatically correct. They could have at least put the game title in quotes to make it clearer, though.

Eh, as long as Soulslikes remain popular and win awards, I’m fine with this.

I don’t mind a little challenge as long as I can learn the game and master a skill. I don’t like QTEs at all, and that includes dodge/parry mechanics. It’s like playing Guitar Hero on Expert with a controller, but you can’t see the notes. If you’re doing what the game wants but you’re a second or so off and that napes you lose, that’s a game I won’t complete… or shed a single tear if anyone pirates it or the studio closes. Games that punish gamers shouldn’t exist. If gamers want the challenge they can have it, but it should be optional and not required to complete the story. I’m fine with achievements being disabled for lowering the difficulty, just make the game accessible to differently abled gamers.

That part of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons when you realise why everyone told you that you needed a controller with rumble to get it, and you got it.

This. macOS does do folder sizes. It rarely shows because it takes forever. Maybe if the drive was formatted APFS it would be faster? Not sure though. My drives are NTFS and exFAT.

But, DM clearly set a timer on when apocalypse would happen if certain goals weren’t met. Players sought other goals and thus, lost the campaign.

I have a cheese shredder that is from before the 1980s. I’m not sure what its actual age is. It looks and feels like something from the Gold Rush days. It’s metal, it’s got that old timey metal look to it (not polished), it has a wooden handle, and it basically spins a circular shredder with a hand crank. It’s probably from the 1950s. You can’t put a lot of cheese in it, but it works well.

Our kitchen table is over 20 years old, but we don’t use it as a kitchen table. Mostly it just collects junk. We eat in front of the TV like a lot of modern couples.

I recently found a hat I got 30 years ago and still have. I don’t wear hats though, so it’s been mostly unused.

No, the one I’m thinking of has a shorter name than that, but I’m sure there are lots of good examples.

There’s a user on Lemmy (I forget what instance and the name of the user/comm escapes me right now) but they just blog on their own comm, which shares their name IIRC, and anyone can reply to them. I’ve replied a couple times and they don’t always respond (and I wouldn’t expect them to; I don’t respond to a lot of replies to me), but when they do, it’s usually a pleasant experience.

You might be wondering how you get subscribers. A lot of us just browse /all, so we see everything. (I’ve since learned how to hide NSFW comms/posts and that’s made my experience better. YMMV. I wish I could still see NSFW discussions; I just don’t need to see porn of girls who look 15, and guys who try to get other guys to look at their junk — it’s usually one or the other, and neither appeals to me at all. So not everything.)

The perception of viability of the “Thanos solution” (snap your fingers and a literal random half of every population ceases to exist) depends almost entirely on which side of the snap you find yourself on. Those for are banking on their survival. They don’t care about yours.

There are, of course, a few who do want to be eliminated by the snap. They don’t want to be in the resulting world, and death by snap is completely painless by any account. You simply cease to be. The only issue is you see it coming, so you have a moment to reflect. But nobody seemed to suffer for it. Just the ones who were left mourned the lost.

There’s also the proposition made by The Leftovers (a TV show on HBO), that if you remove just 3% of the population, the world changes drastically. However, in that scenario, it was only on Earth, and it was only humans and, IIRC… birds? Every other population was not culled at all.

Ironically, the best way to answer a Christian (or, I suppose, any member of any Abrahamic religion), works here. “He woke me up today,” and they say something like “yeah any day above ground is a blessing”. Like yeah, that is literally the best thing I can say about my day. I woke up. I had coffee. Good coffee. I had a good breakfast. I am “blessed” in the kitchen. That was the best part of my day. I have a QR code on my fridge that says “Scan for WiFi”. I’ll give you one guess what YouTube video it opens.

If you ask me, I’ll show you a QR code on my phone. Different code. For some reason. only Android can make the QR code natively. iPhones can scan them and they work. So, I generated the QR code on my old Android phone (which is WiFi only) and sent it to my iPhone. I can show you the code on either phone. It will connect you to my WiFi. Scan the one on the fridge and we’re all going to be hearing a popular 1980s song…

My honest response to that is, I have a limited amount of social energy, and I will absolutely bend over backwards for someone who cares about me just a little. The company will post my job tomorrow if I keel over and die, so no, I don’t spare a thought for them. You get what you give. Next. Question.

Then you should ask the person who answered the other person who asked this for clarification rather than just reposting their question. Because we’re not sure if we should just repost the other person’s answer or if there’s something about it you didn’t understand.

I should be the target audience. I have bad eyesight and I wear corrective lenses (i.e. glasses). Something like Meta glasses would, in theory, help me see by constantly showing me the world around me, not recording like to be viewed later, but only showing me what the cameras see in real-time.

Unfortunately, that product does not exist as such, and I won’t use the Meta glasses that way because they’re designed to be invasive, and I don’t use Meta products anyway. Also, my job literally has a rule against the pervert glasses, as I suspect many do, and many more will follow. While some people want to use the glasses, pretty much no one wants the glasses used on/around them.

I like the idea but not so much the title. I think everybody should have something they like that not everyone else does, but not for a goal. But just to have something unique about them.

My favourite singer is Enya, which is hardly unpopular given that she is the best-selling solo artist out of Ireland (she’s behind U2, which is a band, so they aren’t counted against one another). I don’t just like her music, I know some trivial information, like how she lives in a castle, doesn’t tour, and with her songwriter, invented a language (Loxian) after opting to sing the song from The Fellowship of the Ring in freakin’ Elvish, though nobody asked her to do that. It just made sense to her that part of the song should be in that language that Tolkien invented about a century ago. Following that, she not only made her own language, but wrote this whole sci-fi manifesto behind it, most of which I believe is unpublished, it’s just a guide they use for the language. In summary, the descendants of the Irish go to Mars, discover something between a Stargate and a Mass Effect relay that sends them to a faraway galaxy. Yeah, Enya, of all people, came up with that. Why? Who knows. It’s just background for her whopping five songs in Loxian. And it may not be any more since it’s been 11 years since her last album, her longtime/exclusive producer passed away last year, and she and her songwriter (who is also the producer’s wife) are getting up there in years.

I’d say most people who have heard Orinoco Flow don’t know all that (and most of them call that song “Sail Away”).

My second favourite singer is ReoNa, from Japan, and way fewer people know about her. She’s licensed some of her songs to anime, such as Shadows House and Sword Art Online. She played the singing voice of one of the main characters in the SAO spinoff in the gun world. Her character was batshit crazy, she wanted a true life-or-death stakes VR game like the first season of SAO, and she was secretly everyone’s favourite rock star. Anyway, she’s done a lot of music that isn’t in anime, and her range goes from folksy pop music to hard rock, with a lot of in-between. She also has a “private” YouTube channel where she plays English covers of western songs (I mean, as a Japanese person, she isn’t singing them in Japanese, she’s singing them in English). And by private, I mean it’s her personal channel. Anyone can view it. It’s just what she does on the side. She also cosplays the Vocaloid character, Hatsune Miku (skinny girl with aqua twin tails and “01” tattooed on one shoulder — even if you’re not into anime, you’ve probably seen Miku before). I’ve actually never seen her cosplay. I’m really just here for the music.
