Why are they cutting external threads with a tap, I don’t even think that’s physically possible.
You can also use a tap as a lathe threading tool if it’s got the tooth spacing you want, and the diameter is bigger than any of the dies you have

It’s a thread mill, not a tap, the grooves are horizontal. It technically is possible to cut an external thread with a tap.
Well TIL, not a machinist so I’ve only ever really used taps and dies.
