  • I have type 2 narcolepsy and every genetic marker for high stimulant tolerance.

    I’m hoping to get on the oxybates to see if they help, but my next sleep test isn’t until December. I’m wanting to try a few other meds, but they are both highly addictive and can mess up the test. My current plan is that if can’t get the oxybates after my test, to try some of the other, somewhat sketchier, stimulants and alternate them as I pick up a tolerance. I might have to either find a street dealer or go to Mexico for them though.

    I’m trying to avoid opioids as a substitute for oxybates, but I have to admit that trying codine to see if it helps is getting very tempting.

    Looks like I made it almost five minutes past three, so now it’s nap time.


  • I’m on stimulants that require not just a prescription, but approval from the manufacturer, quarterly check ins and ekgs. It’s now two in the afternoon and I’m hoping I can make it until three before I have to take my second nap. I’ve been at a friends house for a mid-morning coffee, and after the second cup taken a nap in their guest room. I know exactly what I can and can’t do at finely defined levels of sleepiness. I know what it feels like when part of my brain is asleep but I’m still waking around because I have to feed the pets before I go to bed. I’ve woken up from a nap, drank a monster, had a one hour job interview and then gone back to sleep right after. I experience levels of tiredness every day that you can’t imagine and there are no words for.



  • Not all modern filesystems are CoW like btrfs. ext4 is merely journaled, which means that there are rare instances where it can be corrupted, but recovery is fast. However in both cases you can still end up with individualy inconsistent files if, say, the power goes out while the CoW b-tree is percolating up and so the file never gets updated or if the ram cache never has a chance to flush.





  • Not exactly self-hosting, but I’ve worked at two different academic labs that had unique issues and small budgets.

    The first was on top of a mountain at 3km elevation. The low air pressure meant that all hard drives had a lifespan of no more than a year before starting to have issues. This was in the pre-SSD days. The “solution” was to boot from a floppy, never compress data, and have a student return the drives to a low elevation and swap them for the prior ones every six months.

    The second was at a place that was using old Datacube MaxVideo hardware that we would never have the budget to replace. It would crash if the room temperature got above about 18C, so we set the thermostat to 15C. Which doesn’t sound too bad until you’ve tried sitting at a desk for 8 hours where everything is 15C and the heat is just slowly leaving your body into the chair, the desk, and the keyboard. And then you walk outside where it is 32C and instantly start sweating because you’re still in several layers and fingerless gloves.



  • oh they definitely cause some, but not nearly as much as the wing breaking because you’ve concentrated the stress into two small areas, or from having to add so many rotors inside the wings that they’re just one rotor next to another.

    Take a look at a top down picture of one to get an idea of the swept rotor to wing area ratio. The swept rotor area is almost twice the wing area. If all those rotors were inside the wings, there wouldn’t be any wings left.
