The interview is the final test if an AI cover letter slips by us. Anyone trying that nonsense will quickly be exposed at the interview when they clearly don’t know what the hell they’re doing.

Raping your spouse wasn’t a crime anywhere in the country until 1975, and wasn’t illegal nationwide until 1993.

It was also much harder to get a divorce. So men could rape their wives without legal repercussions and the wives couldn’t get a divorce.

If I’m physically in the room with them im the interview, I’m pretty sure I’d notice if they’re using an AI for their responses.

I’d love to see someone try and perform in an interview with ChatGPT or Claude without me noticing from the other side of the table.

The fields let me filter out whether someone meets the bare minimum at a glance in a standard format. If someone gets through that, I’ll read the resume, CV, and cover letter they prepared. If they get through that, they get an interview. If they get through that I’ll check references and make an offer.

Larger organizations take it a step further and have a computer auto-filter candidates based on the fields.

You learn to spot LLM cover letters pretty quickly. And anybody who slips by won’t survive an interview.

I get hundreds of half-ass applications for jobs. But the 10% that actually fill out the application and meet the minimum qualifications almost always get an interview.

The form are important because 90% of the applicants for a job these days aren’t remotely qualified because people shotgun resumes at a hundred jobs at once without even reading the qualifications and all their resumes are formatted differently.

I don’t have the time to go through that, so yeah - I filter out people who don’t bother to fill in the fields because they probably didn’t even read what the job is.

The fields get the resume to my desk. The resume and cover letter get you an interview, and the interview gets the job offer.

I hear about all these people sending out hundreds of job applications in every direction with no response, and it makes sense. When you’re competing against a hundred people for a job, you won’t stand out with a half-ass application. Focus on doing fewer, higher-quality applications.

Real talk - if the applicant can’t be assed to fill out a form or write a cover letter then maybe they aren’t a good fit. Paperwork that people hate to do is critically important for many jobs.

At this point I’d prefer the Chinese government to track me over US companies. The Chinese government won’t let the US government access its databases, whereas Google will.

Yeah. At this point as an American I’m way less worried about in the Chinese government tracking me than I am with the US government. The Chinese government is evil, but I don’t live in China.

You don’t fix a road with a dude and a shovel. The horror you’re seeing there is exactly what happens to a road when you just keep shoveling gravel and cold mix when you need to do at least a mill and overlay, but probably a full-depth repair.

And when you start doing stuff like that now you’ve got to start planning around the underground utilities. Beneath the road you may have water, sewer, gas, electricity, telecoms and more. You’ve got manholes, handholes, storm sewer. And on top of that, half the owners on either side of the road don’t know where their property line is and they’ve installed irrigation systems in the ROW without a permit and the contractors hit water lines they don’t know about every hundred feet, stopping work and costing more money.

And all of this has to be coordinated with the various utility providers to try and make sure yout plans and theirs align. You don’t want to spend millions fixing a road only to have the gas company come in a week later cutting a bunch of trenches and holes they just fill back with a patch, causing the road to fall apart in 2 years instead of 20.

Fuck Flock.

But the cost of road repairs are orders of magnitude more expensive.

My small town entered a contract for 11 flock cameras, and it cost about 65 grand. We also repaved 10 small streets and it cost 8 million.

Definitely don’t remind people to leave their phones at home or use a Faraday bag to shield their tech.

They’re not just cameras. They also log nearby mobile devices. They’ve gone from a few hundred nationwide to over 100,000 in like 2 years.
