Giving him a general pardon and not for specifics was the mistake. Alternate history for Nixon going to trial or any other course other than the one he took is a wild ride. As is most points in history, but it would have been an ugly America, so Ford’s spoken motive had some merit. Whether Reagan makes it in seems to be a debated point, depending on how long the Nixon trial(s) go.
